Thrombocytopenia associated with repletion of iron in iron-deficiency anemia

Two patients with iron deficiency had rapid decreases in their platelet values after initiation of replacement treatment with oral ferrous sulphate or ferrous gluconate. The first patient, whose pretreatment platelet count was 168 000/mmsuperscript 3, developed marked thrombocytopenia (platelet count 21 000/mmsuperscript 3) on day 6 of Fe repletion. The second patient's platelets fell from 725 000 to 105 000/mmsuperscript 3 on day 10 of treatment.
