The distribution, life cycle, behaviour and role of Ixodes ricinus in the transmission of Cytoecetes phagocytophila (the causative agent of tick-borne fever), and louping ill virus in goats in the UK, are discussed. I. ricinus is a 3-host-tick of mainly damp upland grazing land which requires a single blood-meal at each stage and has a 3-year life cycle, of which no more than 3 weeks is parasitic.
