Ticks and tick-borne diseases in Zambia

Ticks and tick-borne diseases in Zambia

ACIAR Proceedings Series, Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (17): 24-25

Information is given on the epidemiology of the tick-borne pathogens Theileria parva parva, T. p. lawrencei Babesia bigemina, B. bovis and Cowdria ruminantium in cattle in Zambia, and on the distribution and occurrence of their vectors, namely Amblyomma variegatum, Hyalomma truncatum, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Boophilus decoloratus. Recommendations regarding tick control are given, but dipping was considered too expensive at US$3/animal/year as all acaricides had to be imported.
