Tidal-flood farming, regional social structure and irrigation in the valley of the river Senegal

Tidal-flood farming, regional social structure and irrigation in the valley of the river Senegal

Cahiers de la Recherche Developpement No.12: 65-77

The transition from tidal-flood to irrigated farming in the valley of the river Senegal poses specific problems of social and regional organization. Before the introduction of irrigated farming, the location of farms was mainly determined by the availability of flood plains, which led to a stratified form of land ownership. Access to land for farming or livestock rearing was decided on an annual basis by a village council of elders.
