Tillage-related soil compaction and its effect upon maize grain yields on a Viljoenskroon fine sand

In field trials in NW Orange Free State in 1976-81, Viljoenskroon fine sand (3% clay) was cultivated with a mouldboard plough to depths of (a) 250 or (b) 450 mm, (c) chisel ploughed at a tine spacing of 400 mm to 370 mm depth or (d) chisel ploughed to a depth of 450 mm at 1.52-m intervals before sowing maize directly over the rows. Av. grain yields did not differ significantly and ranged from 3.75 t/ha in (b) to 4.70 t in (d).
