Timing control of a parasite of the alfalfa leafcutter bee

The chalcidoid parasitoid Pteromalus venustus can cause serious losses of commercially produced and maintained alfalfa leafcutter bees important pollinators of lucerne, in western Canada. The parasitoid emerges in the spring when M. rotundata cells are placed into high-temperature incubation. A method of predicting when parasitoids emerge so that their control can be more accurately timed was investigated.
