Tissue culture and plant regeneration from sunflower (Helianthus annuus) and interspecific hybrids (H. tuberosus X H. annuus)

Immature embryos proved to be the only explant which consistently gave regenerable cultures in all the genotypes studied (4 sunflower inbreds, 6 sunflower hybrids and 2 interspecific hybrids). The most responsive embryos were approximately 12 mmsuperscript 2 in area. Genotype had a significant effect on the capacity of cultures to regenerate. Sunflower inbreds R299 and BHA89 and hybrid A124 X R299 were most responsive.
