Toxicity of artificial vagina liners for bovine spermatozoa

Bovine spermatozoa were collected into one-piece combination liner-collection cones in the artificial vagina. Cells collected with liner-collection cones fabricated from polyethylene showed markedly improved liveability during storage at 4.degree.C as compared with spermatozoa collected using rubber liner-collection cones. Results were shown to indicate that determination of either percent motility or percent unstained cells immediately after semen collection did not adequately reflect toxic effects during collection. The effects of toxicity were apparent within 3 h and were essentially at maximum level by 60 h after collection. Polyethylene is proposed as a desirable replacement for rubber in all parts of the artificial vagina system that come into contact with semen.
