Trypanosomes were found in 12% of 492 tabanids collected in area A, which was grazed by cattle, Cervus elaphus and Capreolus capreolus, and in 7% of 1374 tabanids collected in area B, which was without cattle but was frequented by the 2 species of deer and by Cervus dama. Both areas were north of Hannover, German Federal Republic. Transmission experiments were undertaken on cattle kept indoors throughout their life and on C. dama housed during the observation period of 6 to 17 months.
