A study of in vitro dry matter digestibility in 3 groups (populations) of genotypes (American, European and wild) at the start of flowering revealed that intrapopulational variation was greater than that between populations. Differences between members of a population were as high as 22.5%, and were mainly related to differences in stem digestibility, leafiness and crude protein content.
