Virginity in haplodiploid populations: a study on fig wasps

Virginity in haplodiploid populations: a study on fig wasps

Ecological Entomology, 133: 283-291

The fig wasps which inhabit the figs of Ficus hispidioides were investigated in Papua New Guinea in March-May 1987. The galls formed by the pollinating agaonid Ceratosolen dentifer were also inhabited by 2 other non-pollinating species, Philotrypesis sp. and Sycoscapter sp. A third non-pollinating species, Apocryptophagus sp., caused the production of a different gall type, and was parasitized by Apocrypta mega. In all species, males were wingless and all matings occurred within the fig.
