Moisture profiles of 4 beech/oak stands of different densities at the SW climatic limit of beech in France were used to compare dynamics of seasonal perched water tables and soil drying with regard to stand structure and topographic position. On the slopes, the importance of surface runoff was demonstrated. This runoff leads to a lower level of hydromorphy on slopes than on the plateau and in the valley.
