Wood anatomical and densitometric studies on Norway spruce in the vicinity of an air pollution source

SEM and densitometric studies were made on samples taken at three stem levels from 14 trees felled in Lower Austria in Nov. 1984, viz. (a) within 2 km of a glass works known to emit F and Cl fumes (7 trees 50 yr old) and (b) from a control stand more or less unaffected by pollution (7 trees 58 yr old). Highly sig. differences in fibre length and cross-sectional dimensions of latewood fibres were found in relation to site and position in stem.
