A note on the migration of Apis dorsata in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands

A note on the migration of Apis dorsata in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Bee World 70(2): 62-65

During summer, A. dorsata colonies are found in abundance in the urban area of Port Blair, in areas cleared of forest and in other open localities. With the onset of the rainy season they migrate to deeper, inacessible forested areas and are rarely found in open places. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have a tropical climate with abundant bee forage throughout the year, so it is unlikely that temperature or dearth can be the stimulus for the migration of A. dorsata.
