A novel biochemical screening technique for cold tolerance in rice

Cold tolerant cultivars exhibited a higher unsaturation of polar lipids, particularly of the linolenic acid content, as compared to cold sensitive cultivars under both low and ambient temperature conditions. Tolerant cultivars also were null allelic at the esterase 2 isoenzyme locus (20). Sensitive and less tolerant cultivars had the esterase alleles 21 or 2superscript 2.
