A novel form of intrauterine infection by herpes simplex virus type 2: its association with spontaneous abortion, latent neonatal infection, and adult inflammatory diseases

This review deals with what the author describes as "a common, but novel, form of 'latent' intrauterine HSV-2 infection" in the embryo or fetus. As judged by the presence of type 2 herpes simplex virus antigen in tissues, 3 types of infection in women are described: latent endometrial, amniochorionic and chorionic villus.
