A pedobiological study of the dung beetle Typhaeus typhoeus (Coleoptera, Geotrupidae)

A pedobiological study of the dung beetle Typhaeus typhoeus (Coleoptera, Geotrupidae)

A pedobiological study of the dung beetle Typhaeus typhoeus Coleoptera, Geotrupidae: 168

Studies were conducted on the soil-burrowing activity of T. typhoeus in the Netherlands, particularly as a model for studying the origins of trace fossils, i.e. meniscate infillings found in sandy soils, approximately 14 mm in diameter and up to 15 cm in length. The soil temperature threshold for nesting by the dung beetle was 1-5 degrees C, and for hatching of eggs, 5-9 degrees C. Both high and low soil moisture adversely affected the reproductive behaviour and development of the beetles.
