A perspective on research needs for the rice-wheat rotation

The rice/wheat cropping pattern represents approx. 17.7 million ha or 28% of the cultivated wheat area of S. and SE Asia. Research needs in terms of crop establishment and land preparation, fertilizers, weeds, irrigation, alternative cropping patterns, harvesting, threshing and storage, integrated disease control of typical hot climate diseases by genetic, agronomic and chemical means, and cultivars with special morphological and physiological characters, are discussed.
