A practical method of grading, preservation and use of colostrum for calves in the first day of life

A practical method of grading, preservation and use of colostrum for calves in the first day of life

Veterinarstvi 38(6): 276-279

Colostrum was classified according to its density: grade 1, 1.056 or more; grade 2, 1.055-1.046; and grade 3, 1.045-1.036. After measuring the density, the amount of colostrum to be given in the first day of life was fixed, distributed over 3 meals and bottle-fed. Excess grade 1 colostrum was frozen and stored for 14 to 30 days; it was used in case of poor quality or inadequate amount of colostrum obtained from the dam.
