A review of evidence implicating bovine coronavirus in the aetiology of winter dysentery in cows: an enigma resolved ?

A review of evidence implicating bovine coronavirus in the aetiology of winter dysentery in cows: an enigma resolved ?

Cornell Veterinarian 80(4): 303-311

A review of signs and pathology of winter dysentery and the most recent data in accordance to Koch's postulates (4 criteria) is given, supplemented by a discussion about the limitations of the application of Koch's postulates to certain disease syndromes, including winter dysentery. The disease-causing potential of the coronavirus isolates for germ free calves was recognized, but their causal role in adult cows has yet to be conclusively established, and more information is required about host attributes of disease susceptibility and the role of environmental factors.
