Age related changes in the intervertebral disks of the cervical vertebral column in the horse


, : Age related changes in the intervertebral disks of the cervical vertebral column in the horse. Tierarztliche Praxis 17(1): 73-76

Gross examination of the intervertebral disks of the cervical vertebrae of 103 horses of different ages (42 week old fetus - 23 years) showed that they consisted only of fibrocartilaginous tissue, with no pulpous nucleus, in contrast to what is reported in the literature. Age-related degenerative lesions were disintergration of connective tissue fibres, leading to partial or complete loss of connection between the disks. In the more severe cases the separated disks showed yellow discoloration.
