Age-related changes in articular cartilage thickness of the third metacarpal bone in the thoroughbred
Limbs (n=84) from 46 Thoroughbred horses between 1 day and 264 months of age were examined at PM examination. The lateral and medial regions of the distal metarpal 3 bone were sliced sagittally into 5-mm sections and the thickness of the articular cartilage was measured at 6 sites using stereomicroscopy. A subset of 22 lateral sections were embedded in polyester resin and ground to a thickness of 20-30 micro m. These were stained after decalcification and examined histologically.
