Agricultural development in the Qaidam Basin and ecological problems of oasis agriculture
The Qaidam Basin, Tibet, is an enclosed inland plateau, at an elevation of c.3000 m, and with an extremely fragile desert ecosystem. The physical characteristics of the Basin are first described, followed by a review of agricultural development in the region. The area has always been a wilderness and agriculture was not begun there until 1918. State farms have been dominant in the last 30 years, producing 40.5%, 37.5%, 10% of cereals, oilseed crops and meat, respectively.
