Four approaches to agricultural extension are identified. (1) the commodity-based approach, one of the most widespread formal extension systems in West Africa. In its original form, it follows an organized and coherent set of procedures designed to facilitate the production of a single cash crop; (2) community development-cum-extension, which has operated to a limited extent in Africa and rather more in other parts of the world, especially India.
