There are two main types of less-favoured rural areas in Austria: (1) remote areas and isolated valleys in the Alps; and (2) large parts of the area located close to the eastern border, in the northeast close to Czechoslovakia and in the southeast close to Hungary and Yugoslavia. Agricultural conditions differ between the Alpine areas and the eastern border areas.
