Agricultural production v climate protection. An emerging conflict in the 1990s?

Rising greenhouse gas emissions are examined in the context of changes in the land uses which produce them. The clearing of forested land and associated burning of biomass account for as much as 30% of global CO2 emissions. Rice agriculture and domestic animals are major producers of methane, and significant N2O emissions derive from the use of nitrogen fertilizer. These activities are closely associated with efforts to increase food production, especially in the developing countries.
