Agricultural research in Portugal is done primarily under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) and the Ministry of Education (ME). Research activities under MAPA are shared by the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA), the Livestock Direcotrate (DFP) and the Irrigation and Agricultural Sciences Directorate (DGHEA). Under ME, research is carried out mainly by higher educational institutions and the National Institute of Scientific Research (INIC).
