Field trials in 1986 and 1987 with 2 wheat cultivars indicated that leaf appearance was governed by temp. Nitrogen limited leaf expansion and final leaf size. Grain yield per unit area was affected by water and N stress, and weather conditions. Number of ears and grains/msuperscript 2, and grain wt were the most important yield components. Losses of stem wt were affected by N and water. Changes caused by water, nitrogen and cultivars on LAI were manifested on reflectance measurements.
