Assessment of on-farm yield losses in sorghum due to insect pests

In many parts of Africa, field sorghum is attacked by a number of insect pests, notable among them being muscid Atherigona soccata, a range of lepidopterous stem borers (the pyralids Chilo partellus, C. orichalcociliellus, Eldana saccharina and Acigona ignefusalis the noctuids Busseola fusca, Sesamia calamistis and S. cretica), the cecidomyiid Contarinia sorghicola and a complex of head bugs (including the mirids Calocoris angustatus, Campylomma spp., Creontiades pallidus and Eurystylus spp., the coreids Mirperus spp. and Riptortus spp., the pentatomid Dolycoris indicus and the lygaeid Spilostethus spp.). Studies on yield losses caused by these insects are scanty, yet such information is essential in formulating an integrated pest management strategy for the crop. The various methods of assessing and quantifying the on-farm (pre-harvest) yield losses of sorghum caused by these insect pests are described.
