Assessment of the germplasm of Rosaceous fruits under cultivation in Kashmir Valley. II. Meiotic system and pollen production in almond (Prunus amygdalus L. Batsch), peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch) and their hybrid

Assessment of the germplasm of Rosaceous fruits under cultivation in Kashmir Valley. II. Meiotic system and pollen production in almond (Prunus amygdalus L. Batsch), peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch) and their hybrid

Cytologia 53(4): 665-670

All the varieties of P. amygdalus and P. persica examined were diploid with 2n = 16 chromosomes. Meiosis was regular in both species except for occasional cases of nucleolar dispersion and cytomixis. In some varieties of peach, namely Peshawari, Chaki I and Gol II, microspore abortion was observed after they were released from the tetrad. Pollen viability was low in peaches and some varieties were totally male sterile.
