Three atypical strains (B-1, B-2 and C strs.) of A. flavus were isolated from maize field soils in Thailand. The B-1 str. which formed abundant microsclerotia and showed high aflatoxin B1 producing ability was detected in approx. 50% of the soil samples examined. The frequency of isolation of B-1 str. in the southern region was lower than that in other regions of Thailand. The B-2 and C strs. produced B as well as G groups of aflatoxins.
