In field trials in 1988, japonica rice Hwaseongbyeo was given fast release NPK fertilizer by machine band application at transplanting or applied conventionally in a continuous layer or slow release NPK by band application. Plant height and tiller number/hill were higher with band application than conventional application during early growth but there was no difference during later growth stages.
