Breeding activity of domestic rabbits fed exclusively on pasture

50 rabbits were maintained on 1 hectare of improved pasture for 1 yr. The breeding season lasted from 1 Apr. to 31 July. In the periods 16 Apr.-15 May, 16 May-15 June and 16 June-15 July, fertility (number of litters born per fertile averaged 85.3, 57.6 and 33.6% resp., litter size 7.2, 7.4 and 7.1, and preweaning mortality 36.1, 73.0 and 95.5%. The high mortality was due to myxomatosis and high predation. The interval between successive births averaged 32-35 days.
