Breeding of a new cultivar of silage corn 'Kitayutaka' and its agronomic characteristics

Released in 1988, silage maize Kitayutaka is a double cross hybrid between 4 dent inbreds ((W18ZEHt X Pa 70-5) X (CM91 X 914-2)) from the USA and Canada. The parent lines produce about 5 t hybrid seed/ha. Kitayutaka is similar to Hokuyu and Buffalo in harvest date but exceeds Hokuyu in DM and total digestible nutrient yields.
