The species of Pontania dealt with are treated as a complex comprising 2 species groups distinguished particularly by the presence (herbaceae group) or absence (polaris group) of a pattern of dark markings in the larvae. Three species are described as new: P. foetidae sp. nov., from Salix foetida, and P. maculosa sp. nov. from S. helvetica, both in Austria/Switzerland, and P. breviserratae sp. nov., from S. breviserrata in Switzerland.
