Data collected for trees of d.b.h. 8 cm or more showed that the number of trees recruited into the smallest class decreased from 125 stems/ha over period I (1968-74) to 80 stems/ha over period II (1974-80). Most (95%) of these were broadleaved trees; no hemlock was recruited. Mortality increased from 59 dead standing stems/ha in period I to 68 stems/ha in period II. Most dead stems were <13 cm d.b.h. and about 80% were broadleaves.
