5-Fluorouracil acted as a chemosterilant only in females of the stored products mites Acarus siro and Tyrophagus putrescentiae; when ingested it caused a considerable reduction in both egg production and the viability of the eggs produced. Oviposition was suppressed even in females that had already begun to lay. When fed to adult mites at 2.0% for 1 week after emergence, the compound was a permanent sterilant, almost completely eliminating oviposition.
