When the diverse varieties Raj 911, MACS9, Cocorit S, RCBD81, RCBD53 and Flemingo S and their 15 hybrids were grown in the winter season 1977-1978, GCAs and SCAs were highly significant for all the characters studied. GCA was higher than SCA for plant height, grains/spike and 100-grain weight and was thought to indicate the predominance of additive gene effects, whereas the high SCA variances for effective tillers/plant and greain yield was thought to indicate non-additive gene effects.
