Community, class and grazing management in Zimbabwe's communal lands

People, land and livestock Proceedings of a workshop on the socio economic dimensions of livestock production in the communal lands of Zimbabwe, 12-14 September, 1988, Great Zimbabwe, Masvingo: 311-371
Community, class and grazing management in Zimbabwe's communal lands
The paper evaluates grazing management in Zimbabwe's communal land in terms of community or class identity. It finds the definition of 'community' quite elusive in spite of being a ubiquitous term. A number of implied meanings are discussed though there is little consensus on the use of the term. Models of common property management are examined and the degree of inequality within communities invokes a consideration of class identities in the communal lands.
