Comparative activities of microarthropods and microorganisms in forest-litter humification
In a laboratory experiment using a mixture of 5 g (dry weight) oak lime and hazelnut leaves and 1 litre volume washed river sand, the litter decomposition by microarthropods and microorganisms was studied. The entire experimental litter was heated at 70 degrees C for 1.5 h to exclude arthropods. Eight collembolan and 11 oribatid mite species were then reintroduced, retaining a microarthropod free variant as control. The experiment ran for 270 days.
