Comparative anatomical study of the leaves in hybrids of the Unshu mandarin with Poncirus trifoliata

The leaves of the Unshu (Satsuma) mandarin were relatively thick (0.36-0.69 mm), dark-green and glossy while those of P. trifoliata were thinner (0.11-0.27 mm), lighter in colour and hairy. The F1 hybrids designated 133 and 1 were closer to mandarin, but that designated 154 had leaves similar in thickness to the trifoliate orange. In the F2 hybrid 6342-209, traits of P. trifoliata were predominant, but in the rest the leaves were similar to those of the mandarin.
