The increase in milk yield and butterfat during the second lactation over that of first lactation for Red Dane cows were 18.25 percent and 16.25 percent, respectively, but on a mature equivalent basis, the increase was 5.73 percent and 5.07 percent only. The estimates of heritability from sire component of variance for mature equivalent milk yield were of the same magnitude in both the lactations (0.76). The heritability estimates of butterfat yield were of fairly high magnitude in both the lactation, even though the second lactation had slightly lower value (0.79) than that of the first lactation (0.90). The genetic, phenotypic and environmental correlations between 305 day mature equivalent milk yield and butterfat yield were positive and very high for both the lactations.
