Comparison of potassium hydroxide digestion and a modified Kato technique for the semi-quantitative estimation of Schistosoma mansoni in faeces

A simple method for the semi-quantitative estimation of eggs of S. mansoni in stools, based on digestion of faeces in 4% potassium hydroxide (KOH), is described. 50 stool samples were examined by the 2 techniques from residents of 2 villages in the Northern Luangwa Valley, north-east Zambia (an area highly endemic for S. mansoni), in September 1985. 10 false negatives were recorded by the Kato technique, but none with KOH digestion, resulting in prevalences of 62 and 82% respectively.
