Conformation and dairy performance in three successive lactations of local black-pied cows and their crossbreds with Holstein-Friesian cattle

For 67 Polish Black-and-White Lowland (PBWL) and 64 Holstein-Friesian X PBWL cows from a herd which had averaged 4900-5400 kg milk in the previous 3 lactations and was housed on straw litter, and for 74 and 73 similar cows from a herd which had averaged 4100-4600 kg milk in the previous 3 lactations and was housed on rubber mats, milk yield averaged 4218, 5242, 3455 and 4314 kg resp. in the 1st lactation, 4391, 5266, 3723 and 4834 kg in the 2nd, and 4709, 5577, 4282 and 5301 kg in the 3rd; corresponding figures for milk fat yield were 166, 204, 135, 165, 172, 200, 145, 184, 186, 215, 169 and 204 kg. All differences between purebreds and crossbreds were highly significant. Age at 1st calving averaged 867, 824, 875 and 827 days in the 4 groups resp., the duration of the 1st calving interval 396, 403, 378 and 390 days, the duration of the 2nd calving interval 387, 379, 381 and 374 days, and age at the end of the 3rd lactation 1942, 1905, 1912 and 1871 days; differences between purebreds and crossbreds were significant. 16.5, 15.1 and 8.8% of the crossbred cows from the 1st herd and 11.5, 12.5 and 8.9% from the 2nd herd were culled in the 3 lactations, mostly for infertility and mastitis. The corresponding percentages for the purebreds were 18.2, 25.9, 10.0, 10.5, 22.6 and 13.7, the principal reasons being infertility and low milk yield. Overall, the crossbreds were significantly heavier than the purebreds (536.4 vs. 516.8 kg), they were taller, longer, broader in the chest, and had a smaller thurl width than the purebreds.
