Control of variant surface antigen switching in trypanosomes

The relationship of the following highly unusual features which characterize VSG gene expression in trypanosomes is discussed: activation of VSG genes by transposition to specific "expression sites" (ESs), the organization of genes into polycistronic transcription units, maturation of the polycistronic pre-mRNAs by trans splicing with a mini-exon or spliced leader RNA, transcription of ESs by alpha -amanitin-insensitive polymerases, and ES switches.
