Cultivating and distinguishing Abies grandis and A. concolor

Cultivating and distinguishing Abies grandis and A. concolor

Sozialistische Forstwirtschaft 34(6): 181-183

The characters distinguishing A. grandis and A. concolor are listed. From experience in E. Germany, A. concolor is probably absolutely frost hardy, but A. grandis exhibits varying frost hardiness. Intermediate specimens exhibiting characters of the two species are less damaged by frost than 'pure' A. grandis, their growth performance is superior to that of A. grandis and A. concolor, and these should be preferred for planting.
