Cultivating poverty: the case of the Green Revolution in Lombok. In: Rice societies-Asian problems and prospects

Cultivating poverty: the case of the Green Revolution in Lombok. In: Rice societies-Asian problems and prospects

Studies on Asian Topics, Scandinavian Institute of Asian Studies, Denmark (10): 124-150

The paper examines and compares the responses to the Green Revolution of two local communities in Lombok, Indonesia. Karang Sari village is situated close to the capital, whereas Suren is quite far from the capital and is much more bound to a traditional way of life. In Karang Sari, the high yielding varieties (HYVs) of rice were easily accepted. However, many changes followed, for example, the traditional harvesting tool was replaced by the sickle, thus greatly reducing labour requirements.
