Cultivation and development of Microphallus pygmaeus (Trematoda: Microphallidae) in fertile chick eggs

Cultivation and development of Microphallus pygmaeus (Trematoda: Microphallidae) in fertile chick eggs

Parasitology Research 74(4): 396-398

The development of M. pygmaeus in the chick digestive tract, chick embryo subchorioallantoic space, and chick chorioallantoic space to which 0.2 ml chicken serum was added each day, was compared. 100 metacercariae were used/chick or egg. After one day, ova development was greater in those trematodes in chick intestines than in those on the chorioallantois. After 3 days, those in chickens had produced 10-78 eggs (mean 29.7) whereas those in chick embryos had developed 0-21 (mean 5.8) or (if supplemented with serum) 0-46 (mean 16.7). On day 6 the flukes maintained in chicks had 78-240 eggs (mean 166.4) compared with 2-22 (mean 9.8, many malformed) and 0-85 (mean 24.4), respectively.
