Cultivation of a fern, Azolla filiculoides, in rice fields for mosquito control

Results of field observations during 1987 in Guangtung County, Hunan province, China, demonstrated that cultivation of the floating water fern A. filiculoides in rice paddies could prevent the oviposition, and hence reduce the larval density, of culicine mosquitoes, particularly Culex tritaeniorhynchus. The larger the surface area covered by the fern, the greater the reduction in larval numbers; 95% cover reduced larval numbers by 79%.
