Cultivation of sexually mature Brugia malayi in vitro

Cultivation of sexually mature Brugia malayi in vitro

American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene 43(1): 3-5

Using a previously described culture system (see Trop. Dis. Bull., 1988, 85, abst. 2893) which is free of mammalian cells and composed of commercially available reagents with 10% human serum the authors have succeeded in culturing Brugia malayi in vitro through all its vertebrate life-cycle stages. Third-stage larvae, maintained at 37 degrees C in an atmosphere of 5% CO2, almost all (about 85%) developed into sexually mature male and female worms after 60 days in culture.
